Case overview
In collaboration with the South Bay Regional Public Safety Training Consortium, the San Jose Police Department began revolutionizing police cadet training. The goal was to enhance report-writing skills among police cadets, thereby ensuring greater accountability and more effective referrals for prosecution. To achieve this, the agency sought the expertise of our creative team to produce a series of six interactive video modules.
The Brief
The San Jose Police Department needed to replace outdated and insufficient training content with comprehensive video modules aligned with current laws and provide in-depth guidance on report writing. The key challenge was creating engaging, lifelike scenarios to immerse cadets in realistic situations. This involved incorporating body camera footage that mirrored department-issued cameras, complete with timecodes and on-screen graphics. Additionally, the videos needed to feature role-played dispatch traffic to simulate radio communications.
Our Approach
We equipped instructors with GoPro cameras mounted at chest height to bring this ambitious project to life. These cameras were complemented with microphones to capture authentic interactions during role-play scenarios. The video footage was meticulously edited in a single take, maintaining the illusion of a real-life situation. On-screen timestamps were added to aid cadets in report writing, ensuring they could accurately document events. Any radio communication or traffic code errors were addressed by re-recording voiceovers to maintain consistency and accuracy.
The Results
The impact of our video modules on police cadet training was profound. With up to 38 cadets in each class utilizing these videos, report writing grades improved significantly. The high-quality production and lifelike scenarios led to enhanced comprehension and application of report writing skills.
Furthermore, neighboring law enforcement agencies eagerly adopted our training modules, reporting immediate success and a growing demand for more content. Recognizing the effectiveness of these videos, the South Bay Regional Public Safety Training Consortium began sharing them with other training academies across California, benefitting law enforcement programs statewide.
This collaborative effort between our creative agency and the San Jose Police Department elevated training standards and contributed to greater accountability and professionalism within the law enforcement community.
